Visiting Barwell produced a courageous display at the Scohlars Ground becoming the first team to stop Chasetown from finding the net this season.

The Scholars enjoyed the upper hand during the opening 45 minutes and their compact system proved efficient defensively and effective going forward, with midfield and wing backs quick to support Karl Edwards and Jordan Archer up front.

Their first attack carrying real impetus arrived on 14 minutes. Following stylish build up play an Edwards cross caused panic in the Barwell defence and James Tomlin’s attempted clearance ricocheted off the post for the first of seven Chasetown corners to Barwell’s one.

Chasetown pushed on. After 20 minutes Andrew Westwood powered through to connect to a Lee Wright cross but the ball bounced awkwardly for Westwood who scooped it just wide.
At the other end home keeper Mark Wiggins was called into action for the first time when he calmly caught from a Jonathan Paton effort from 20 yards.

Barwell’s Ben Batteridge then did well to win possession before picking out Paton only for the striker’s effort to flash a yard wide of the far post.

The Scholars went in search of the opener once more. Aussie Greg Downes picked up the loose ball from another Chasetown corner, took a touch and launched a stinging shot across goal that flew inches past the far post.

Another Chasetown offensive came when Jonathan Gould put Jordan Archer in the clear. Archer beat the off-side trap and his low drive beat keeper Leon Oswald but Barwell defender James Heathcote flew across the goalmouth to clear off the line. Archer was quick to return the clearance against the post and then, once more hit the rebound goalwards but the recovering Heathcote produced an incredible block to deny again.

The last chance of the half fell to Jack Hulin as he rose highest and sent his glancing header narrowly off target from a Chad Degville-Cross delivery.

Just after the interval Tomlin hit his own post for the second time in the game when he got caught up in the action following a Westwood drive that Oswald pushed into the pack of players.

On 56 minutes Barwell were saved by the woodwork once more. The tireless Westwood chipped over the head of his marker and smacked the cross bar with a spectacular half volley.

Degville-Cross played a one-two with Matthew Wood and stormed down the right flank to send a dangerous ball into the box. Edwards was lurking at the far post and volleyed just wide.

The Kirby Roaders weathered the storm and responded by manufacturing neat interlinked passing movements and threatened with counter attacks. Following a one such good move Tom Lillicrapp lobbed over from outside the area.

This lifted Barwell, Paton was becoming a menace and was first to a Chris Castle through ball but Wiggins did just enough to obscure his angle, forcing the striker to fire wide.

With the game opening up nicely during the final quarter of an hour the honours could have swung either way. Wiggins pulled off a fine point blank save to prevent Paton and then stretched quickly to pluck away a surprise Conor Hastings drive from near the corner flag.

Chasetown refused to stop searching for the goal that had eluded them all game. Gould, who had found space in the danger area, was unlucky not to connect to a square ball from substitute Samson Alalade.

But they were forced to accept the draw. Their last attempt to clinch victory came two minutes from the final whistle when Degville-Cross managed to tee himself up just outside the 18-yard box, but his shot sailed inches off the far post.

The stalemate was a fair result from two footballing sides that prefer creativity as opposed to the route one method. It was an interesting contest and the scene is nicely set for the pre-Christmas reverse fixture at Kirby Road next week. Barwell rode their luck, although saved by the woodwork four times; they also produced chances and now fancy themselves to terminate the Scholars’ unbeaten run. Chasetown, on the other hand, will be determined to enter the festive season unscathed and full of Christmas spirit.
