The visitors fielded a stronger team than on the previous two encounters against Chasetown FC this season as they aimed to take something back to Oxfordshire with them.

For Chasetown, former academy product, Lee Wright returned to the fold as part of a season-long loan from Wycombe Wanderers.

The left winger was involved in the action on nine minutes when he fed Karl Edwards and the striker’s cross just eluded Drew Aiton who had cleverly managed to get in behind the Banbury back line.

The hosts continued to search for an opening. Right back Craig Deakin surged forward and produced a fine effort from long distance which Jack Harding tipped over the bar.

Banbury’s resistance ended after 18 minutes. They conceded a second corner when Harding palmed wide a Chad Degville-Cross effort. David Bridgwater’s corner caused panic amongst the defence and Edwards smacked the loose ball against Harding’s body. Captain Jack Hulin showed good instincts as he pounced on rebound to put the league leaders in front.

The Scholars charged on, trying to double their lead. Bridgwater drilled in another corner which Courtney Sowe rose well to meet, but his header was inches over.

Chasetown could not sustain their attacking intentions for the whole of the first period and Banbury started to fight back as the half time whistle drew closer.

On 36 minutes the busy Joe Eyre thundered over from a John Travers cross. Four minutes later Mickey Earl chased down a lost cause and unleashed a 35-yard rocket which flew just wide.

Chasetown, influenced by central defender Matthew Wood, weathered the storm until the interval and exited the first period with their noses just ahead, but fully aware of Banbury’s attacking capabilities.

The hosts were first to threaten in the second period. Christian Darby, who was making his first start for the Scholars, curled in to Edwards who switched the ball into the feet of Wright, but his run was intercepted by Richard Oakley.

A delivery from Degville-Cross almost fooled the visiting rear guard as he sent in a deep, swerving ball from the right which Edwards nearly connected with. This was followed by another attack from the right flank as Deakin weaved his way from the byline to the six yard box, forcing a close quarter save from Harding.

Chasetown opportunities continued to come and Banbury’s late first-half comeback was rapidly becoming history as Jonathan Gould and James Lunn fuelled the fire with long range shots.

The second and decisive goal came from Wright on 80 minutes when he coolly side-footed home with a volley following a cross from Sowe.

The Scholars were now looking comfortable to cement their position as table toppers. Gould played Lunn into the open who was desperately unlucky to see his power drive parried away by Harding.

Wolstanton United from the Staffordshire County Senior League visit the Scholars Ground next Saturday (November 5) for the second round tie in the Staffs Challenge Cup.
