Lichfield City FC kicked off their 2011-2012 campaign with a convincing win against near neighbours Polesworth in the Les James Challenge Cup.

The game got off to an explosive start with two goals in the first three minutes. City opened the scoring with Mark Rose netting on his
debut, but straight from the kick-off Polesworth were awarded a penalty that was cheekily converted by Tony Fallon.

This sparked the visitors into action and they began to play the ball round well, but failed to muster any real chances.

And they paid the price after 21 minutes when Lichfield moved ahead with a Shaun Williams header from a Lewis Bourne corner.

This goal seemed to settle City down and they started playing more like a team who should be challenging for honours this
season.

A brilliant solo goal by Dan Mason put the home side 3-1 up in the 31st minute as he cut in from the left before firing home from just outside the area with the outside of his left foot.

The same player then struck again from the penalty spot after 40 minutes to open up a comfortable 4-1 lead at the break.

The second half saw Lichfield increase the margin to 6-1 with long range efforts from Williams and Bourne.

With a convincing margin, City started to ease off and Polesworth’s Fallon to score a second goal from the penalty spot.

Lichfield travel to Bromsgove tomorrow night (August 9) for their first leauge game in the Midland Combination Division One, kick-off 7.45pm. They then entertain Glades Sporting at 3pm on Saturday.
