An MP has welcomed the news that Parliament will discuss HS2 after a date was confirmed for a debate on the issue.

Campaigners had feared that the discussion in the House of Commons would not happen after signatures gathered before the launch of a new e-petition site would not be counted.

Under the new system, any petitions that gain more than 100,000 can be considered for debate by politicians.

However, a discussion on the issue will now take place on October 13 – a move that has pleased Conservative MP Christopher Pincher. He said:

> “A number of people told me they were concerned at reports that a pen and ink petition would not be considered for debate in the Commons in the same way as the government’s new E-petition initiative. However, I am pleased it has been confirmed that it can be.
>
> “There are clearly huge problems with the HS2 business case – I do not think the proposals presented stack up. So we need to debate the alternatives in the House of Commons.”

Campaigners from the Stop HS2 group have claimed the confirmation of the debate is a [“small but highly significant victory”](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2011/09/16/parliament-to-debate-hs2-after-petition-gathers-100000-signatures/) in their battle to stop the line which is set to cut through parts of Lichfield and the surrounding villages.
