A GROUP of MPs have called for the leader of Staffordshire County Council to resign.

It comes after accusations made by the Hope Not Hate group regarding posts made on social media platforms.

Cllr Cooper is the second county council cabinet member to come under scrutiny over online posts after Cllr Peter Mason’s content was also scrutinised, [leading him to apologise for his choice of words](https://lichfieldlive.co.uk/county-council-cabinet-member-apologises-for-social-media-posts/).

A group of Labour MPs, including Lichfield’s Dave Robertson and Tamworth’s Sarah Edwards, have called for Cllr Cooper to step down.

In a joint statement they said:

> “Ian Cooper has, by sharing this kind of material, exposed his far-right and racist opinions. He should now resign the leadership and his seat.
>
> “No wonder he was reluctant to take action against Cllr Peter Mason given his own views. Staffordshire deserves better than this outright bigotry.”

A Reform UK spokesperson said:

> “We are undergoing an urgent internal investigation over Cllr Cooper’s non-disclosure of social media accounts.”

The criticism of Cllr Cooper comes after he previously defended Cllr Mason.

In an email to Reform UK councillors and seen by Lichfield Live, the county council leader said members should stand alongside their colleague by being “positive, proactive and on the offensive – never try and justify or show weakness”.

His communication continued:

> “I don’t intend for Peter to resign, nor be bullied by the opposition. They are using this because of their own local difficulties. We stick together.
>
> “Peter has already publicly apologised for any offence or misunderstanding that may have been caused. He continues to serve the people of Staffordshire with dedication, integrity, and openness.”
