# MPs join calls for additional support for communities hit by ongoing HS2 works

TWO local MPs have joined calls for more communities and businesses hit by ongoing HS2 construction to receive increased support.

In a joint letter to the Government, Lichfield's Dave Robertson MP and Tamworth's Sarah Edwards MP, together with MPs from other affected areas, have urged ministers to strengthen the HS2 Community and Environment Fund (CEF) and the Business and Local Economy Fund (BLEF).

They have highlighted the need for additional support for communities along the Phase 1 route between Birmingham Curzon Street and Handsacre.

The MPs said the funds had played an important role in helping residents, community groups and businesses cope with disruption – but they say recent changes mean some areas will face a "disproportionate and extended period of uncertainty and disruption".

The request follows the Government's announcement of plans for a new rail link between Birmingham and Manchester.

Mr Robertson said:

> "Communities across the constituency, particularly Lichfield, Streethay, Fradley and Alrewas, have lived with the impacts of HS2 for many years.

> "The HS2 Community Fund has provided valuable support, but the reality is that our communities now face a longer period of disruption than originally anticipated.

> "It is only right that additional support is made available to reflect those changing circumstances, especially given the further delays to the reopening of the A38 Streethay northbound slip road."

Miss Edwards added:

> "Residents in my local villages have already experienced considerable disruption from HS2 works over a long period of time.

> "While the Community and Environment Fund has provided valuable support to some local communities, the changing timetable and future of parts of the project mean that disruption and uncertainty are likely to continue.

> "It is therefore important that communities are not left without support simply because works have been delayed or paused.  
>  
> "The Government should ensure that funding remains available for as long as communities are affected, with appropriate measures in place around sites where works are paused, so that residents are not left bearing the consequences."
