# New chamber opera to be performed in Lichfield

A new chamber opera will be performed at the Lichfield Festival.

Beyond the Garden features music from award-winning composer Stephen McNeff and libretto by Irish poet Aoife Mannix.

The work is inspired by the relationship between Alma Mahler – muse to artists such as Klimt, and wife of Gustav Mahler – and her daughter Manon.

A Lichfield Festival spokesperson said:

> “Set in 1960s New York, McNeff’s opera explores memory and reminiscence through the eyes of a woman looking back on her life, superbly realised by Susan Bickley, one of the world’s leading mezzo sopranos, who appears regularly on major opera stages worldwide.
