# New memorial honours legacy of “father of the RAF”

A MEMORIAL honouring the legacy of “the father of the RAF” has been unveiled.

The National Memorial Arboretum welcomed Viscount Lord Trenchard, grandson of Sir Hugh Trenchard, for the event.

The Trenchard’s Legacy Memorial has been placed in The Halton Grove, which was dedicated in September 2000 to remember the men who trained at RAF Halton between 1922 and 1993.

A spokesperson for the National Memorial Arboretum, said:

> “Sir Hugh Montague Trenchard had an instrumental role in the establishment of the Royal Air Force, having worked his way through the ranks to become Marshal of the RAF in 1927.

> “In 1919, Sir Hugh, in his memorandum to Parliament on the organisation of the newly formed Royal Air Force, outlined his vision of a centre of excellence to train the future highly skilled technicians required for the rapidly expanding force.

> “Parliament agreed, and the aircraft apprentice scheme was introduced.  
>  
> “Trenchard’s Legacy, the new commemorative sculpture by Timothy Potts, celebrates over 40,000 apprentices who passed through RAF Halton.

> “Many apprentices achieved great things in the service of their country and afterwards in their civilian careers. One of the most well-known is Sir Frank Whittle, recognised as the inventor of the jet engine.”
