# New memorial statue to Burntwood’s mining past moves a step closer

A new memorial to Burntwood’s mining past has moved a step closer.

Representatives from local groups get a first look at the Scamp sculpture

The statue of a pit pony and miner – known as Scamp – has been created by local artist Peter Walker.

And Lichfield District Council’s planning bosses have now given the go-ahead for the artwork to be placed at Sankeys Corner.

Scamp will stand at over 2.2metres high on the corner of the main junction and be a permanent reminder of the area’s heritage.

“For me this is perhaps the most important artwork I will make,” said sculptor Peter Walker. “It is for the town I grew up in and for the people I know.

“It is of great importance that the history of this town isn’t forgotten and as the town gets larger the more the mining heritage disappears.

“The artwork will forever stand as a symbol of an era gone by, in an place which I have walked past a thousand times with my family, and which will be I trust something which the fantastic community spirit of Burntwood will cherish.”

Scamp was created in clay before being sent to be transformed into a bronze sculpture.
