# New plans for Lichfield’s £100m Friarsgate development are unveiled

New plans for the £100million Friarsgate development in Lichfield have been unveiled.

The developers have submitted the proposal to planning chiefs after a public consultation resulted in a number of changes to the scheme.

Among the revisions are improved links between Friarsgate and the city’s existing shopping area, better parking facilities and more space for shops and the new cinema.

“The consultation in January was extremely successful with most people understanding the benefits which the proposed changes will bring,” said David Clancy from S Harrison Developments Ltd.

“The retail market has changed significantly in the past 18 months. The changes we have now made to the scheme reflect those developments. As we now have it configured, Friarsgate will better serve the people and the economy of Lichfield.”

The hotel which was proposed in the original plans has been removed to make space for more shops.

Mr Clancy added: “Within the new design we have improved the parking layout and created an even better mix of retail units.

“The cinema has attracted interest from all of the major operators and an announcement is expected later this year about who will operate what will be one of the region’s first purpose-built, fully digital cinema complexes.

“Despite tough trading conditions nationally there is interest in the Friarsgate development from a hard-pressed High Street retail sector. It is an indication of the appeal of the city that brand-leading and specialist retailers and restaurant chains are expressing their desire to be a part of the scheme which will complement what is already on offer in Three Spires and the rest of the city centre.”
