Shoppers enjoying the Lichfield Farmers’ Market

Stallholders in Lichfield have avoided large increases to the price of their pitches at the city’s markets.

Lichfield City Council is set to approve plans to raise the rental on stalls at their markets by 50p.

If councillors approve the changes at a meeting in the Guildhall tonight (January 21), the cost of pitches from April 2014 would be:

- Friday market – £21.50
- Saturday market – £22.50
- Farmers’ market – £22.50

Meanwhile, users of the Guildhall are set to see a three per cent rise in their charges.

A change is also being proposed in the way the building can be rented.

The City Council is planning to introduce a minimum two hour rental.

In a document explaining the change, the council said: “At present the minimum hire period is one hour, and there are a few organisations which book for just an hour, paying between £5.40 and £21.15 for their booking.

“A one-hour booking can prevent a subsequent booking being taken for a longer period, and such short bookings are proportionately very costly in terms of the associated room set-up and invoicing costs.”

The new pricing structure for markets and the Guildhall will be discussed at a meeting of Lichfield City Council at 6.30pm in the Guildhall tonight (January 21).
