# New report claims HS1-HS2 link would be “real alternative” to long distance car travel

Campaigners supporting high speed rail say linking HS2 with the HS1 project would provide a “real alternative” to long distance car travel.

Greengauge 21 has [released a report](http://greengauge21.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6282f16c3d0956a90bbdb2863&id=46d5863ca2&e=42618f2c0c&ref=lichfieldlive.co.uk) outlining the benefits of providing a joined up network.

The group says such a link between the two high speed rail schemes would fill an “awkward gap” between the Midlands and Europe.

“We have identified a substantial demand for domestic high-speed rail services over the proposed link connecting HS1 and HS2,” said Greengauge 21 director Jim Steer.

“Providing a link between HS1 and HS2 would provide a real alternative to much of the longer distance car travel around London on the M25.

“A good frequency domestic service operating over the link could provide a good – if not perfect – option for travellers between the North/Midlands and the continent.

“Instead of an awkward gap in the journey between Euston and St Pancras, travellers would be able to make a transfer at the same station where there are already a wide range of European services.”

The group’s figures suggest that should such the link be built, rail would capture 34 per cent of the international travel market from the Midlands and the north by 2033.

Lichfield is currently one of the key parts of the HS2 scheme with the link to the existing West Coast Main Line to be built in the area.
