The forward was recruited by Scholars boss Charlie Blakemore after netting 19 times for Mickleover Sports last season.

But despite criticism over the move, Steadman believes he can further his career in Staffordshire.

He told *Lichfield Live*:

> “After last season I wanted a chance to play in a higher league and I had offers from other clubs including Chasetown. Charlie contacted me at the end of last season and said he wanted to build a squad for promotion and I was in his plans to get to that next level. He told me he was keeping a very strong squad from last year and wanted to add myself and a few others and I wanted to be part of it.
>
> “My old manager said it was a sideways step, but it’s not because Chasetown are ambitious and want to play at a higher level like myself, so this can only help me develop my game and hopefully play at the best standard possible.”

Steadman has impressed in Chasetown’s pre-season campaign, netting in the [Scholars’ 2-0 friendly win against Stoke City](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2011/07/25/match-report-chasetown-fc-2-stoke-city-0/).

But despite only making the move in the summer, the left winger revealed he had been on Blakemore’s radar for some time.

He explained:

> “Charlie had contacted me two seasons ago when I was playing for Mickleover and I scored two against Chasetown. He was interested in signing me then, but at the time I was in my first couple of months at Mickleover and wanted to stay there.
>
> “Both clubs got promoted and then the next season we just stayed up, while Chasetown did very well in the league and cup.”

Steadman will be in contention to make his competitive debut when Chasetown kick-off their league season by entertaining Whitby Town at the Scholars Ground on Saturday (August 13), kick-off 3pm.

The Blues finished 16th last season and have clocked up pre-season wins against Fishburn Park, Pickering Town, Bridlington Town and Eastwood Town. However, they suffered a 6-1 loss against Darlington and were also beaten by Whitley Bay and Hartlepool Utd in their build up to the new campaign.

Managed by former Newcastle United and Northern Ireland midfielder Tommy Cassidy, the current Whitby squad includes former Middlesbrough striker Andy Campbell and one-time Sunderland midfielder Darren Williams.
