# Official opening for refurbished shopping area in Alrewas

A shopping area near Lichfield has been given an official opening after a complete refurbishment.

Dignitaries, shopkeepers and local residents saw Lichfield District Council leader Mike Wilcox and district councillor Margaret Stanhope cut the ribbon on the new-look area on Main Street, Alrewas.

Cllr Wilcox said:

> “I was delighted to open this smart shopping area, which is far more in keeping with the conservation area. This project is a good example of partnership working, and I would like to thank everyone who has helped to give the villagers of Alrewas a shopping area they can be proud of.”

The makeover, features a pedestrian area defined by new paving, as well as four new trees and a community and parish council notice board.

Alrewas Parish Council led the project, after securing a £24,000 grant from Lichfield District Council’s Conservation Fund. Together with Alrewas Conservation Group and Alrewas Civic Society, the parish council also contributed more than £5,000 to the works.

Cllr David Butcher, chairman of Alrewas Parish Council, added:

> “Main Street is at the heart of our village, and this shopping area, which features a mini supermarket, fish and chip shop and newsagents, is an important meeting place and focal point that we were keen to improve. The results are fantastic, and we’re all delighted with our new-look Main Street.

> “This whole project could not have happened without the support of our three local shops, and we would like to thank them for working with us on this project.”

The three shop owners – Midlands Co-operative Society, The Alrewas Fryer and R J & S E Paul Newsagents – own the land that was redeveloped, and jointly contributed £5,000 towards the works.
