# Olympic hopeful happy to support St Giles Hospice Solstice Walk

An Olympic hopeful has taken a break from her 2012 training to bring a golden touch to the preparations for the St Giles Hospice Solstice Walk.

Team GB synchronised swimmer Yvette Baker dropped into the charity’s Whittington hospice to see for herself the care given to people living with cancer and other serious illnesses.

Following her tour of the Compassus Centre in February Yvette said: “I knew all about the incredible work St Giles does for people in need – but to actually see with my own eyes the care and support patients and their families receive at the hospice was a real privilege.

“I was in awe of the staff and volunteers at St Giles, and incredibly moved by the empathy and compassion they clearly have for all of the patients.

“St Giles Hospice performs a crucial role in the community and it’s vital local people realise how heavily it relies on fundraising and donations to operate.

“There are so many ways to show your support for St Giles – and the forthcoming Solstice Walk is a perfect opportunity for women across the area to get together, have a good time and raise much-needed funds for hospice care.”

The 2012 Solstice Walk, sponsored by Fradley-based bagged salad specialist Florette, is a high-spirited night-time nine-mile stroll through the streets of Lichfield taking place on June 23.

The event will see hundreds of women dress up in magical fairy-themed costumes to complete two 4.5-mile laps of the cathedral city at their own pace from 10pm.

The Solstice Walk is St Giles Hospice’s biggest single fundraising event and it has raised more than £370,000 for the charity since it was established in 2007\. Entry is £15 per walker, and although it is open only to women aged 16 and over, men are welcome to get involved by volunteering as stewards.
