# Petition calls for reduced speed limit on stretch of A38 in Lichfield

A PETITION has been launched in a bid to improve safety on a stretch of the A38 in Lichfield.

Residents in the area are calling for a reduced speed limit at Swinfen.

They say the move would help keep local people and visitors to the Heart of the Country Shopping Village safe.

Kat Stubbs, who launched the petition, said vehicles were often exceeding the existing 70mph limit on the A38, leaving those travelling by foot or bicycle at high risk.

She said:

> “Living nearby, I see every day how difficult and dangerous it can be to access the area without a car.

> “Residents, visitors to Heart of the Country Village and people travelling to Swinfen Prison are often left trying to cross or navigate the A38 on foot or by bicycle, with very limited protection.

> “Although the speed limit on this stretch of road is 70mph, traffic frequently travels much faster, often reaching 85mph.

> “While there is a crossing point, pedestrians can sometimes wait up to 20 minutes for a safe gap in the traffic. During that time they are standing beside a fast-moving dual carriageway where conditions can feel extremely unsafe.

> “For anyone without access to a car, the A38 effectively becomes a barrier between homes, workplaces, and local destinations.”

The road recently hit the headlines after [the death of a seven-year-old boy](https://lichfieldlive.co.uk/family-pay-tribute-to-beautiful-young-boy-who-died-in-a38-incident/) on the same stretch of the A38.

Kat said the need for a reduced speed limit would “help prevent further tragedies” and improve safety for pedestrians.

> “Recent tragedies have brought the urgency of this issue into sharp focus.

> “The petition calls for the speed limit on this stretch of the A38 to be reduced from 70mph to 60mph, alongside the introduction of safer and more accessible crossing options for pedestrians and cyclists.”
