The Old Mining College Centre

There had been [proposals to change the Queen Street building’s title](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2016/01/28/councillors-to-discuss-changing-name-of-the-old-mining-college-centre/) to Burntwood Town Hall.

But Burntwood Town Council, which operates the centre, will now carry out further consultation will now take place after [opposition from local councillors](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2016/02/03/changing-old-mining-colleges-name-would-damage-burntwoods-heritage-says-labour-leader/).

However, local residnt John Catliff has now [launched an online petition](https://www.change.org/p/burntwood-town-councillors-don-t-change-it-s-name-the-old-mining-college-chasetown?recruiter=68411233&utm%5Fsource=share%5Fpetition&utm%5Fmedium=twitter&utm%5Fcampaign=share%5Ftwitter%5Fresponsive) to ensure the area’s mining past is not forgotten.

“This is part of our heritage,” he said. “Why would anyone but a newcomer to the area deem it necessary to rename it.”

Cllr Richard Mosson, leader of Burntwood Town Council, said that his controlling Conservative group would listen to local views.

“We have conceded that maybe, on reflection, we were a little too hasty in making a decision about changing the name of the building,” he said.

“We thought it was a good idea in principle and have stated that if the name were changed that we would ensure the building’s heritage was never forgotten.

“I made a proposal last week to consult with both the businesses that reside in the building, along with regular users, and that is what the council will now do. The intention is to bring this feedback to full council.

“If there was a strong feeling against the proposal then we would obviously look to retain the building as the Old Mining College Centre.”
