# Plans for annual event to replace youth council set to be debated

COUNCILLORS are set to debate plans which could see changes to the way young people engage with Lichfield District Council.

The local authority had previously operated a youth council – with a £60,000 budget agreed at a meeting back in 2022.

But now a Lichfield Youth Annual Conversation event is being planned to replace the initiative.

A report on the proposals will be discussed at the council’s overview and scrutiny committee next week.

Cllr Steve Norman, who chairs the committee, said:

> “The original aim was to pilot a youth council with two secondary schools and to develop from there to incorporate all senior schools in the district.

> “A press release from Lichfield District Council was issued on 2nd February the following year saying that 30 members had attended the inaugural meeting.

> “However, at a meeting a year later only seven members were recorded to have attended. The following May and June meetings had only two members attending making them inquorate.

> “The committee had an open invitation to representatives of the Youth Council to attend one of our meetings so we could ask them directly how it was going despite the promise of regular updates during the Pilot Scheme.

> “Some of us were getting frustrated by the lack of information about the youth council’s progress. We were then told that a re-launch was planned for the autumn last year, but this failed as well.

> “Now we have a new proposal for an annual meeting instead of monthly – which I always thought was ridiculous as even the council doesn’t meet every month.”

Cllr Norman said he was hoping there would be answers about why the youth council failed to exist.

> “I accept that we need to look forward. We need to properly engage with young people, especially as they may be getting the vote at age 16 as they do in the Channel Islands, but I know there will be a lot of questions from members of the scrutiny committee as to what went wrong and why it took so long to report this to us.”
