Plans to create a mausoleum in Burntwood have been rejected.

Walsall Burial Park

The owners of the Walsall Burial Park on Burntwood Way had hoped to convert a cemetery building to include a crypt and burial vault.

But the scheme has been rejected after councillors decided it was “inappropriate” for Green Belt land and did not provide adequate parking facilities.

There were also concerns that the neighbouring Erasmus Darwin Academy would cause issues in future if the development went ahead.

The school had objected to the plan with principal Bernice Astling saying: “I cannot understand how the siting of a mausoleum next to our academy site would be deemed appropriate by anyone.

“The planning document states that it would feature a ‘calm and tranquil’ setting, but I don’t think they have taken into account the wider context of the site.

“I do not find it conceivable that mourners visiting the mausoleum would find it acceptable to hear the normal and excpected noise levels of a secondary school with nearly 1,000 children.”

And planners agreed with her views.

A decision notice said: “The site lies adjacent to the local school and, due to noise and general disturbance within school grounds, will not offer peaceful surroundings leading to the likelihood of complaints against the school.”

It is the latest mausoleum planned for the region to be rejected in recent years. A previous proposal for the Springhill Cemetery site [was turned down](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2013/09/19/mausoleum-development-is-rejected-by-lichfield-district-council-planners/) in 2013.

Full details of the proposal and the decision notice can be seen on [Lichfield District Council’s planning website](https://planning.lichfielddc.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=summary&keyVal=NDQE87JEH9K00&ref=lichfieldlive.co.uk).
