# Plans to convert Lichfield hotel into homes get the go-ahead

The Angel Croft Hotel

A Lichfield hotel is set to be converted into apartments after planners approved the decision.

Nine homes have been proposed for the Grade II listed building on Beacon Street.

A statement supporting the plans said: “Although there are significant constraints imposed by the need to work sympathetically with the historic fabric of the building and the surrounding area, the building and its surrounds also represent a great opportunity for a high quality development that will give the building and the area new life, activity, and a viable long-term future.”

Uncertainty over the future of the building had been raised after it was named [on English Heritage’s Buildings at Risk register](http://risk.english-heritage.org.uk/register.aspx?id=46972&rt=0&pn=2&st=a&ctype=all&crit=angel&ref=lichfieldlive.co.uk).

And local history blogger Kate Gomez, from [LichfieldLore](http://lichfieldlore.co.uk/?ref=lichfieldlive.co.uk), said before the decision that she hoped the plans would get a positive reaction.

“If something positive doesn’t happen soon then there is a possibility that we may lose it altogether and be left with nothing more than a vacant building plot,” she [said on her blog](http://lichfieldlore.co.uk/2013/11/17/guardian-angel/?ref=lichfieldlive.co.uk).

“I hope that the Angel Croft will not be put at further risk by short sightedness and nostalgia about an unsustainable past.”

The building was originally a private house built around 1790, before being converted to a hotel in the 1930s.
