Plans to upgrade the road junction outside Drayton Manor Theme Park have been given the go-ahead.

A new traffic light system is set to be installed as well as improvements to the entry and exits roads.

Drayton Manor said the improvements were needed to manage plans to increase the number of visitors to the park over the next decade.

The owners say they hope to replace older, lower capacity rides. The park can currently operate 12,000 rides per hour, but hopes to raise this to 15,000 per hour.

“It has become increasingly apparent that the effective management of traffic is key to supporting an increase in visitor numbers to the park.

“At present, the current access arrangements act as a constraint to growth. Ensuring efficient and safe access arrangements is not only important for the future success and growth of Drayton Manor Park, but also necessary to ensure that park traffic does not cause capacity and highway safety issues on the local and trunk road network.

“The proposal is to improve the access arrangements to Drayton Manor Park through the provision of a new managed traffic system.

“To increase the capacity and effectiveness of the access arrangement the construction of a new exit road on the grassed area to the north of the existing driveway is proposed, linking to an upgraded signal controlled T-junction with Coleshill Road.”
