# Plans unveiled to convert historic hall near Lichfield into apartments

An historic building near Lichfield could be converted into apartments.

Proposals have been submitted to convert Grade II-listed Packington Hall in Whittington Heath into ten apartments and demolish factory buildings around the site.

The new owners of the site – which was bought in 2009 – had originally planned to return the 22-bedroom hall into a single property. However, according to the planning applications, the size meant the scheme “wasn’t considered viable”.

The statement adds:

> “The idea of conversion to apartments was pursued in order to preserve and restore this once magnificent hall.  
>  
> “The conversion involves res-erecting the original hall structure and window openings, many of which on the rear ground floor have been in filled and hidden by the factory buildings since 1945\. Internally every effort has been made to retain the original walls.”

Built in the mid-18th Century, Packington Hall’s most recent guise as a factory building for Gill’s Cables came about after the company moved to the site in the 1940s after their Birmingham base was bombed during the war.

The company – which restored large parts of the building during the 1990s – eventually left the hall in 2007.

A historical report carried out as part of the application has confirmed that the restoration of Packington Hall can only be carried out if the factory buildings are demolished.

The application continues:

> “The owner bought the site with the ambition to restore, not only the historic building, but the residential status of Packington Hall. Approval to demolish the factory buildings will have a tremendous impact on the setting of the Listed Building and remove the blight on the landscape.”
