Four men have been arrested after a Lichfield city centre cash machine was tampered with.

The incident took place between 9am and 10am on July 23 at the NatWest ATM in Market Street.

Bank staff were alerted to a device on the machine which had retained a customer’s card. No money was taken from the customer’s account and no other cards were taken by the machine.

A short while later three men from Derby, aged 26, 29 and 37, and a 31-year-old London man were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud. They were interviewed before being released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Officers are appealing for anyone who saw four men – described as being of Eastern European appearance – acting suspiciously in the area at the time. They also want to speak to a man who raised concerns about the alleged activity with NatWest staff on Saturday.

Witnesses should ring PC Felicity Bownds at Lichfield Police on 0300 123 4455.
