Lichfield’s shopmobility service could be taken over by a private operator.

The Friarsgate redevelopment project will see the loss of the facility’s current home at the city’s bus station, prompting a wider review of its future.

Among the options being considered [was the complete closure of shopmobility](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2016/06/15/closure-among-the-options-being-considered-as-councillors-review-future-of-lichfield-shopmobility-service/).

But a report to a meeting of Lichfield District Council’s overview and scrutiny committee revealed Easy Living Mobility, based in City Arcade, had indicated to the local authority that it could take on the service going forward.

The report said: “The discussion was very positive and it was noted that Easy Living Mobility have several mobility shops in the Midlands area.

“They offer a very limited shopmobility scooter hire service to their existing customers in Lichfield, based on a daily hire charge of £5 per visit.

“Easy Living Mobility would be keen to expand their existing shopmobility hire provision if the outcome of the council’s service review decided to no longer operate a shopmobility scheme directly.”

A number of options are now being considered by the council, including transferring the nine mobility scooters, one powered wheelchair and four push wheelchairs to the private provider for a peppercorn payment.

The meeting of the overview and scrutiny committee meeting will take place on Thursday (October 6).
