PLANS for a new speed indicator system to be installed in Burntwood will be discussed by councillors.

A local community Speedwatch co-ordinator has asked Burntwood Town Council for a display to be installed on Milestone Way.

If approved, it would see a real-time display tell motorists how fast they are travelling.

A report to a meeting of Burntwood Town Council’s policy and resources committee, said:

> “The Speedwatch volunteers have identified Milestone Way as a particular hotspot for speeding.
>
> “A speed indicator system (SIS) is an electronic roadside device that displays real-time vehicle speeds, alerting drivers when they exceed local speed limits.
>
> “This initiative aims to improve road safety, reduce speeding, and increase public confidence in traffic control.”

The report said studies showed that such systems can reduce vehicle speeds by around 10-20%.

The council is being asked to fund up to £6,000 to install and maintain the device in the first year.

The report added:

> “The deployment of SIS in Burntwood offers a cost-effective, visible, and largely well-received method to reduce speeding and enhance community safety.
>
> “While not a complete solution, SIS devices can complement enforcement efforts and provide valuable traffic data.”

The policy and resources committee will discuss the proposals at their meeting this evening (14th May).
