# Report reveals council has carried out hundreds of food hygiene inspections over the past year

MORE than 540 food hygiene inspections were carried out by Lichfield District Council over the past year, a new report has revealed.

The local authority’s regulatory and licensing committee will discuss the Food Safety Performance Review for 2024-25 at a meeting this week.

As well as the overall figure, the report revealed that six hygiene improvement notices were issued for “serious legal breaches”.

There were also 32 complaints investigated about food premises hygiene, food handling and pest control, while 90 concerns were investigated about food products.

The report from Cllr Alex Farrell, cabinet member for housing and the Local Plan, said steps had been taken to ensure the council was fulfilling its duties to deliver effective food safety controls.

He said:

> “Food Standards Agency research found that there were an estimated 2.4million cases of food-borne disease in the UK in 2018\. More than 16,000 of these cases required admission to hospital, and almost 200 cases resulted in death.

> “It is therefore essential that our duties in terms of local food safety controls are delivered and are undertaken in an approved and consistent manner in accordance with the Food Standards Agency code of practice.

> “An additional one full time equivalent permanent post was re-established during the year which has allowed officers to recover from a backlog of outstanding inspections from the previous year.”

The report will be discussed at the committee meeting on Thursday (19th June).
