With a programme that ranged from Bach to Hoagy Carmichael and Irving Berlin, the talented Curzon Brass kept an audience of music fans entertained when they appeared at St Michael’s Church.

With trumpet players Jacob Smith and Matt Tarrant, Tom Hayes on horn, trombonist Dan Price, and Mark Dilley on Tuba, their well thought out programme and arrangements allowed the ensemble strength of the unit to shine, while also giving telling weight to some of the solos.

Taking on V. Ewald’s Brass Quintet no 3 in D Flat Major was a tough challenge for the group, as was the A Downes Suite No1 for Brass Quintet, which took cues from both classical and jazz music.

Hoagy Carmichael’s Georgia On My Mind was a showcase for the soulful trombone of Dan Price, while the concert closer, Irving Berlin’s Puttin’ On The Ritz taken at more a gallop than a brisk canter and showed the talent of these five musicians to fine effect.
