THE Lichfield Players ensured an intense evening as every cast member committed to their roles.

And when I say committed that includes the asylum inmates.

You would think a cast of wandering inmates would be minor roles, but it was they who contributed to the insane atmosphere from the moment the audience walked in until they left.

They never let up once on their vacant stares and creepy wanderings around the set and into the audience.

In addition to their disturbing roles they also had to switch quickly to become multiple characters – and carry out scene changes in plain sight.

High praise to every main character for bringing the screenplay to life. Dracula (Robin Lewitt) was brilliantly menacing, and I particularly loved manic Gavin Kisley as the fly and spider eating Renfield. He made me wonder whether I should actually be smiling at the antics of someone so clearly disturbed.

Hannah Lewitt as Mina Murray excelled in her role. But every one of the main cast members really did Dracula author Bram Stoker proud.

The casting was testament to the rigorous audition process which attracted about 50 applicants for just 18 roles.

The adaptation, by playwright Jenny King, performed to packed houses. Loud sound, lighting effects, dry ice and widescreen backdrop images all contributed to the atmosphere of the show, which was produced after just 14 weeks of rehearsal.

The blood, make-up effects and creepy costumes – created with the help of South Staffordshire College fashion and textile students – added to the drama.

The white-sheeted set with staircase and balcony managed to serve as a castle, house, asylum, cellar and more with simple prop changes.

Huge congratulations to director Simon Horton, producer Ian Davies and everyone involved on and off stage.

On leaving the theatre I felt I had escaped a lunatic asylum. I was drained – so job well done Dracula.
