# Review: Kieran Goss @ Lichfield Guildhall

One of Ireland’s best known singer songwriters, Kieron Goss made a more than welcome return to Lichfield Guildhall.

With just a catalogue of distinctive songs, an accomplished guitar style that borrowed widely from a number of styles, a powerful voice, and captivating stage presence he kept the largely more mature audience entertained for more than two hours.

Kieran Goss

His work has been covered by some of the biggest names in Irish music, such as Christy Moore and Mary Black, but he has also managed to carve out a successful solo music career for himself.

The first set was started with One Boy’s Treasure – a narrative song full of pathos about growing up – before the love song All That You Ask Me. Times Ain’t What They Used To Be was an upbeat, driving protest song, while I Came Through was a song about redemption.

The set was finished with the evening’s first cover, Tom Paxton’s The Last Thing On My Mind.

As well as the music, the charismatic singer also kept the crowd enthralled with detailed stories about his life on the road, and the problems of being the tenth child in a family of 15, as well as his dad’s way with the internet and computers.

During the second half Kieran was joined by his wife Annie for three country inspired songs, the highlights of which were We’ve Got Us and a fine harmony version of Never Let Her Slip Away.

This set also featured his best known song Out Of My Mind, which was another number full of pathos set to a driving back-beat.

The concert was finished with a stirring rendition of The Four Tops’ Reach Out, I’ll Be There, before an encore of the jazz favourite I Cry A Little.

In all, this was a very good concert and fans of quality music should make a point of seeing Kieran Goss during his seemingly unending tours.
