The Garrick Rep’s latest production is perfect for the cosy intimacy of the Garrick’s Studio space. By turns funny and fondly nostalgic, September in the Rain is made up of episodes which are a series of holiday snaps from Blackpool in the years following the war.

Based on the experiences of award-winning playwright John Godber’s own parents’ 30 years’ worth of holidays in Lancashire’s traditional fun capital this beguiling play is as evocative as the remembered tastes of candyfloss, seaside rock and fish and chips.

These are deeply conservative people who even when they rise to car ownership cling to the familiar as the world undergoes unimaginable change.

Under Gareth Tudor Price’s sensitive direction Heartbeat star David Lonsdale and Sarah Jane Buckley (Hollyoaks) bring the shared past of this couple vividly to life. We see the happy times and the jokes, but it’s not all lovey-dovey – we also see the insecurities, the social embarrassments and the inevitable rows that are recognisably true to life.

The stock ingredients are all there – the landladies and lodgings, boarding houses and benches, deckchairs and donkeys, even the knotted hankies, reminders of the holidays we used to have before package tours blew them away, subtly evoked throughout by John Brooking’s clever designs.

Those boarding houses on the Golden Mile stand boarded up now, empty monuments to changing tastes. But if you fancy an amusing, nostalgic stroll through a past we hardly noticed disappearing, plus a real, touching human story, this play is definitely for you.
