# Review: Snow White and the Magic Mirror @ Lichfield Garrick

Well it’s that time of year again when we look forward to some Christmas fun and for me there’s nothing better than a good old-fashioned panto.

Last year’s Garrick offering was the superbly innovative Alice In Wonderland but this year they’ve gone back to their festive roots with Snow White and the Magic Mirror and the result is a triumph of seasonal entertainment.

Penned and directed by its star Ian Adams and with a really great house band under the baton of Garrick Director Adrian Jackson this show is bound to be a hit, but with a supporting cast which includes a Muppety chorus of comedy puppets as the Seven Dwarves it’s got the lot.

Ian Adams is a friendly force of nature as the genial Fraulein Von Strudel whose very presence on stage lights up the whole house as smiling, dancing, and taking us into his warm confidence he reigns in happy control of the whole proceedings. He may be the last of the great pantomime dames (we’re told they’re a dwindling breed), heir to the late great Danny La Rue, and if so should be treasured like all endangered species.

He’s got the perfect foil to his sparkling presence in evil adversary Queen Evilene of Transylvania, played here with real relish by our own delightful Joanne Malin taking time off from reading the BBC news. Jo has done violence to her own sparkling nature to create this role but she does it with stylish relish, singing, dancing and cursing like a trouper.

In addition there’s the lovely Katie Marie Carter who has a really great singing voice as Snow White, a satisfyingly handsome Prince in Daryl Armstrong, and Greg Bernstein as the wonderful jester Chester. Add in a lot of local youngsters for the chorus plus those puppets and you have a non-stop spectacle of dance and song.

After the interval it was noticeable that a lot of the merry grown ups in the audience seemed to have discovered their inner child, resulting in hilarious audience participation with plenty of shouting out and general laughter proving this one’s not only for the kids.

I don’t want to spoil all the silly surprises but memorable highlights include the very funny Les Miserables-inspired first-half ending and the clap-along (F)rocky Horror Show finale. I genuinely enjoyed every Christmassy minute of it, and I know you will too.
