It says a lot for the Lichfield Players’ reputation that they can muster such a large audience on a chilly September night, but we were always in for some nicely judged silliness with this inspired choice of play.

The cast of Tiptoe Through The Tombstones

I won’t spoil the surprises except to say the plot concerns a murderous family (the Tombs) who assemble to hear the reading of a will, and a corrupt pair who’ve decided to do them out of their inheritances. Stereotypes abound, and the good-humoured cast give them the full welly.

If the whole thing’s too preposterous to be taken seriously, that’s their job done to perfection – this is no-holds-barred comedy.

Phil Shaw is too-briefly sublime as the bent solicitor Mortimer Crayle in a preposterous ginger wig while his accomplice Zoe Mapleton (Gina Martin) copes heroically with keeping the whole plot bubbling to the bitter end. Sam Crawford minces magnificently as the terminally camp Vernon while Hannah Davies dissembles prettily as the agency maid of all work.

The exuberant Sue Evans brings the psychic Octavia Tomb to vivid life while Sue Carter effortlessly inhabits the role of the butch trouser-wearing Henrietta. Maurice Alden as Augustus Tomb got a huge laugh with his wonderfully wooden demise while Caroline Lowe is divinely dotty as Athene Tomb.

Nigel Lowe brings a leavening note of credibility to the proceedings as the almost-normal Larry Lewis while I think we have a new local star in Karen Fisher who vamped spectacularly as the sexy Fabia Tomb.

To be honest I lost track of the plot after the first half but that’s no accident because these are quite simply good old-fashioned comedy murders of the kind the Players excel at and not to be taken at all seriously, a nice change from the daily dose of doom and gloom that passes for news now the Olympics are over.

The surprises continue right up until the final curtain, all in deadly earnest, with innumerable twists and turns and all in pursuit of a little good fun. And what’s wrong with that?
