Rock and roll was the order of the day when Travellin’ Man – The Ricky Nelson story opened Lichfield Arts’ Spring 2019 season.

They played music from the likes of Chuck Berry and gave good versions of the songs that Ricky Nelson wrote and performed throughout his career, which saw starring alongside John Wayne in The Searchers, as well as being the second most successful singer of his era, behind Elvis Presley.

We were treated to such well known songs as Travellin’ Man, Hello Mary Lou, Lonesome Town, Stood Up, Waitin’ in School, Garden Party, and A Teenage Idol.

The show included anecdotes about life in the 1950s, and the impact the Ricky Nelson had on rock and roll – and teenagers – and put him in a historical context, as well as looking at his continued influence.

This was a fine show, featuring great musicianship, lively performances, and was a good way to open the season.
