# Royal British Legion launches Poppy Appeal in Lichfield

The 2011 Poppy Appeal has been launched in Lichfield.

This year’s Royal British Legion (RBL) campaign was officially kicked off outside the Guildhall.

The launch of the Poppy Appeal 2011 in Lichfield

Lichfield’s MP Michael Fabricant joined members of the Lichfield Branch of the RBL to launch the appeal, which hopes to raise £550,000 across south Staffordshire.

“We’re urging everyone to throw their support behind the Poppy Appeal 2011 as money raised will go towards providing vital care for injured Service people,” said local Poppy Appeal organiser David Haynes. “The Legion has committed £50million over ten years towards The Royal British Legion Battle Back Centre and the operating costs of four Personnel Recovery Centres around the UK.

“The Battle Back Centre will be a centre of excellence for adaptive sports and adventurous training, which will help service personnel recover after their injuries, by focusing on what they can do rather than cannot do.

“The centres will help our injured Armed Forces build confidence, motivation and independence and then either return to duty, or reskill and make a successful transition to civilian life.”

Up to 800 injured personnel will be helped each year through the Battle Back Centre and Personnel Recovery Centres.

They will help former servicemen like Lee Smith, 26, who was administratively discharged from the Staffordshire Regiment after a short career. He went on to work for seven years in the building trade before finding himself unemployed.

Having been offered another job, Lee had to complete two training courses – so he asked the RBL for help.

“Without the help of the Royal British Legion I wouldn’t have been able to book these courses.

“The Legion doesn’t just help me and my generation, but all generations of the Armed Forces family.”
