A UNIQUE sculpture of football icon Pele celebrating scoring the first goal of the 1970 World Cup Final is being sold by a Lichfield auctioneer.

The 38cm-tall, one-off bronze was created by Andy Edwards to commemorate the legendary Brazilian’s 2008 visit to Stoke City to unveil a life-size statue of Gordon Banks.

His previous work has included statues of Motörhead rocker Lemmy, The Beatles and Queen Elizabeth II.

He also played a prominent role in the nationwide First World War commemorative art installation There But Not There, designing and sculpting the life-sized Tommy silhouette figures representing the millions of soldiers who went to war and did not return.

The Pelé statuette – which kicks off the sale with Richard Winterton Auctioneers on 13th July July 13 – is joined in the sale by a framed Seleção Brasileira de Futebol number ten shirt signed by the iconic and given to Andy during his visit. It was later signed by Gordon Banks too.

Both lots are accompanied by certificates of authenticity and are expected to fetch more than £10,000.

The sculpture and framed shirt come to auction via Ian Dyer, aka The Stoke Poet, who was given them in 2018 by Andy as a gift.

He said:

> "Andy is a very, very good friend and we go back decades – we were in the same class right through to the end of school.
>
> "He’s also an amazing sculptor, deservedly world-renowned, and this bronze brilliantly captures one of football’s most enduring images."

All commissions from the sale will be donated to the Stoke City Foundation charity by Richard Winterton Auctioneers.

Auctioneer Richard Winterton said:

> "Pele and Gordon Banks – two of the greatest players of all time who also created one of the iconic moments in football with the miraculous 'Save Of The Century' during the 1970 Brazil v England World Cup match.
>
> "But it was the aftermath and how sporting rivalry turned into a lifelong bond treasured by both which shows how beautiful the beautiful game can be.
>
> "A one-off bronze by the renowned Andy Edwards, the shirt with its multitude of autographs, and the story behind both make these incredible pieces of memorabilia which will be highly sought after by not just Stoke City fans but devotees of football worldwide.
>
> "This is also an extremely rare opportunity to buy a piece of Edwards’ work, especially this size."

The catalogue for the auction will go online a week before the sale at [www.richardwinterton.co.uk/auctions/auction-calendar](http://www.richardwinterton.co.uk/auctions/auction-calendar?ref=lichfieldlive.co.uk).
