# Sculpture trail faces axe to pay for scaling back Lichfield park project

A planned sculpture trail in a Lichfield park is likely to be scrapped if a controversial woodland scheme is scaled back.

Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet will meet this evening (October 1) to discuss proposals to reduce the size of the Darnford Park project.

Around 6,800 trees had been planned for the park, but public reaction has forced a rethink of the scheme – meaning some elements face the axe completely.

A recommendation from a council overview and scrutiny committee is for the planned woodland to be scaled back in line with suggestions by local residents.

“Soon after fencing works started in May 2013, the council started to receive objections,” the council report explained. “Work was suspended to allow some time to review the objections and to determine how to progress.

“The council \[also\] received a petition of 1164 names.”

But despite plans to scale back the scheme, the council has admitted it will be out of pocket.

Part of the funding for the woodland project will now not be paid to the local authority and the removal of ‘rabbit-proof fencing’ along with other costs means the bill for the aborted scheme stands at around £29,000.

The Forestry Commission is likley to cover around £5,000 of that meaning the council is likely to use a £25,000 pot of money earmarked for a sculpture trail to make ends meet.

The report added: “The overview and scrutiny committee recommends that this is funded by the existing Section 106 grant awarded to the parks project and that the final phase of improvements – for a sculpture trail – is abandoned.”
