CHASETOWN departed the FA Cup after a penalty shootout defeat in their replay at Banbury United.

The Scholars began brightly on the road with Joey Butlin’s early volley going just wide.

They broke the deadlock when Luke Yates’ effort was deflected home to give Mark Swann’s men a 1-0 lead after ten minutes.

But Banbury levelled things up after half-an-hour when Luke Stokoe netted.

Joe Thompson went close to restoring Chasetown’s lead before the break when his powerful effort fizzed over the crossbar.

The home side sent a shot into the side-netting early in the second period before powering another strike just wide.

Banbury then had penalty appeals waved away as the game began to stretch.

Chasetown went close to winning it just before the end of normal time when Jack Langston’s effort was deflected just wide.

Curtis Pond had to produce a smart save at the start of extra time to prevent Banbury from going in front, while Ty Webster tested the hosts at the opposite end but his shot was over the top.

Butlin fired wide and then hit the side-netting as the Scholars went in search of a winner, while Webster also went close with a strike just wide of the upright.

Banbury had their chance to win it before the shootout but Pond made another good save.

Both sides netted their first penalties, but Kieran Cook blazed over Chasetown’s second kick – and with the home side scoring all of their strikes from 12 yards it was they who progressed to the next round at the expense of the Scholars.
