# St Giles Hospice joins new art project exploring attitudes towards death

A new arts project will examine how patients and staff at a Whittington-based hospice feel about death.

St Giles Hospice has joined a team of artists and creative writers for the Unique People, Unique Identities project which aims to create a new book to raise money for the charity.

[](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2010/09/23/charity-set-to-benefit-when-lichfield-and-burntwood-people-make-a-will/stgileshospice/)The publication will be launched in May next year to coincide with [Dying Matters](http://dyingmatters.org/?ref=lichfieldlive.co.uk) week, while an art installation will also be created for St Giles Hospice’s Compassus Centre in Whittington.

Community artist Glen Buglass said: “Death is a difficult subject to talk about but we’re speaking directly to the people who are going through it, whether it’s them personally, their relatives or people who look after them.

“We think it’s pertinent to ask these questions because as a society and as a country with an ageing population we need to make decisions on how we look after people.

“We want to keep it positive and treat it as a celebration of peoples’ lives. The book will give people the chance to talk about their lives, their memories and their opinions. Once people open up and start talking it’s amazing to hear some of the stories they have to tell.”

Illustrator Peter Tinkler will be providing images for the book, while other contributors to the project include visual artist Dominic Pote, photographer Ming De Nasty and writer David Calcutt.

Ian Leech, St Giles Hospice’s community engagement officer, added: “We are delighted to be taking part in this challenging and innovative project.

“It promises to be a fascinating few months compiling the thoughts of so many of the people that make up the St Giles family and we look forward to seeing the results.”

The Arts into Health project will be held at the St Giles facilities in Whittington and Sutton Coldfield as part of the hospice’s 30th anniversary celebrations. The following workshops are taking place:

- November 6 – 10.30am to 12.30pm
- November 13 – 10.30am to 12.30pm
- November 21 – 10.30am to 12.30pm
- November 28 – 10.30am to 12.30pm
