# St Giles Hospice welcomes announcement of £100million funding boost for end of life care sector

AN investment package to support end of life care has been welcomed by bosses at St Giles Hospice.

The Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting has unveiled a £100million funding boost for adult and children’s hospices to help provide end of life care.

An additional £26million has also been earmarked for children and young people’s hospices in 2025-26.

He said:

> “Hospices provide the care and support for patients and families at the most difficult time so it is only right they are given the financial support to provide these services.

> “This package will ensure they will be able to continue to deliver the compassionate care everyone deserves as they come to the end of their life in the best possible environment.”

The funding will support improvements including refurbishments, IT system upgrades and enhanced facilities for patients and visitors. It will also help develop outreach services to support people in their own homes.

Elinor Eustace, CEO of St Giles Hospice, said:

> “We warmly welcome the announcement of Government support for hospices.

> “This significant investment recognises the vital role hospices play in providing essential end of life care in our communities, while also recognising the significant financial challenges we face as a sector.”

The Whittington-based hospice has recently had to close a number of beds and make staff redundant as it battles a funding shortfall.

Elinor said:

> “This support comes at a crucial time for St Giles following the difficult decisions we’ve recently had to make.

> “The funding will help ease the immediate financial pressures hospices face and allow us to focus on what we do best – providing outstanding care to patients and their families when they need us most.

> “We look forward to working alongside the Government and our NHS partners to ensure more people can receive the care they need, where and when they need it.

> “This support will help us continue preventing hospital admissions and supporting people to receive care in their preferred setting. As a significant provider of healthcare in the community, we remain committed to working with the Government to make sure everyone approaching the end of life gets the care and support they need, when and where they need it.

> “It is only through a combination of sustainable funding streams and continued community backing that we can continue providing specialist palliative care across our region.”

Lichfield MP Dave Robertson said the additional funding would support the “outstanding” care provided at St Giles Hospice.

> “I am pleased that the Government is spending £100m on supporting hospices to deliver the best possible end of life care for their patients, families, and loved ones.

> “This is the biggest investment the hospice sector has seen in a generation – and it will help hospices improve their buildings, equipment and accommodation.

> “I will be pushing the Government to confirm what this means for the Midlands and hospices such as St Giles who do an outstanding job of providing high-quality end of life care for many people in my constituency and beyond.

> “The Government is committed to ensuring every person has access to high-quality end of life care and is taking immediate action to rebuild the health service and deliver improved standards of care, making sure that it is fit for the future.

> “The consultation on the future of healthcare in our country is ongoing. I will work to ensure that the voices of hospices such as St Giles are heard as the wider social care plan is developed.”
