Staffordshire Police have launched five new videos to help improve access to the force for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

The British Sign Language (BSL) videos were launched to mark the European Day of Languages.

They last almost seven minutes in total and include details about how to contact the force in an emergency and non-emergency, how to reach local officers and where to find Staffordshire Police on social media.

“Communicating with our diverse communities is a priority and we’re always looking at new and better ways of making information available,” Assistant Chief Constable Jane Sawyers explained. “As such, we are delighted to launch these videos on our website.

“They are intended to remove barriers to access and promote equality for BSL users by giving them information about key services in a format they can make best use of. There is potential to add further videos in the future should they prove popular.”

There are nine million deaf or hard of hearing people in the UK, representing one in seven of the total population. BSL is the first and only language for many deaf people. The communication barriers faced by BSL users are significant and, at present, there is no widely available immediate access to interpreters.

Cam Nicholl, service development director at the Digital Accessibility Centre, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Staffordshire Police have taken the step of including videos for those in their community whose first language is British Sign Language. This is a truly wonderful example of an organisation taking into consideration the needs of their entire community regardless of abilities and demonstrates a pro-active approach towards digital inclusion and should be applauded.”
