A breath test being carried out

Lichfield drink-drivers are being targeted as past of a new campaign this summer.

The initiative is part of a national crackdown, co-ordinated by the Association of Chief Police Officers, that will run from June 1-30.

Officers will breath-test motorists across the county following a similar campaign in December in which over 1,800 people were tested.

Les Dyble, Staffordshire Police’s force traffic management officer, said:

> “Summer evenings and weekends can lead to people going to the pub or having a drink at barbecues. We’re simply asking motorists to think about the grave consequences of drink driving – for themselves and other road users.”

Officers will carry out random roadside checks and stop anyone committing a traffic offence or driving in a manner that suggests they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Drivers involved in road traffic collisions are also routinely breath-tested.

Mr Dyble added:

> “Motorists who provide a positive breath-test will be arrested and taken to a police station. If a station test is positive you will be charged and sent to court. If convicted you will be banned from driving for at least 12 months, get a heavy fine, court costs and could be sentenced to prison. You will have a criminal record and, without your licence, could lose your job.

> “If your drink-driving leads to someone being killed or seriously injured, the consequences are even worse. Drinking and driving is anti-social, against the law and wrecks lives and families. The safest choice is to not drink and drive at all. You can’t work out your own alcohol level – but police officers can.”
