# Swimming pools should be basic civic amenity, says leader of Lichfield District Council

Swimming pools should be a basic civic amenity, the leader of Lichfield District Council has said.

Cllr Doug Pullen made his comments after [a BBC report](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-62391323?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Bbbc.news.twitter%5D-%5Bheadline%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D&at%5Fcustom4=8F868A0A-1939-11ED-B617-06014844363C&at%5Fmedium=custom7&at%5Fcustom1=%5Bpost+type%5D&at%5Fcampaign=64&at%5Fcustom2=twitter&at%5Fcustom3=%40BBCNews&ref=lichfieldlive.co.uk) revealed the scale of closures across the country.

The long-term future of public swimming facilities in the city has been a source of debate in recent years with the facility at Friary Grange Leisure Centre.

Plans have been put forward for a replacement at Stychbrook Park.

Cllr Pullen said the council had shown they were supportive of keeping facilities available for residents.

The council has put forward [a bid to the Government Levelling Up Fund](https://lichfieldlive.co.uk/council-bidding-for-15-7million-from-levelling-up-fund-to-help-pay-for-new-leisure-centre-in-lichfield/) for more than £15.7million to help cover the costs of the new leisure centre at Stychbrook Park.

The proposed facility would feature a six-lane swimming pool with moveable floor, a community room, 80 station fitness suite, spin studio, EV charging points and cycle storage.
