MORE than 5,800 people have signed a petition calling for plans to rebrand the National Memorial Arboretum to be scrapped.

Proposals will see the Alrewas site [renamed as the Royal British Legion National Remembrance Gardens](https://lichfieldlive.co.uk/national-memorial-arboretum-to-be-renamed/) from September.

The change will be introduced in phases in a plan that bosses say will strengthen the ability to “invest int he long-term future” of the arboretum.

Mark Atkinson, director general of the Royal British Legion, said:

> “The National Memorial Arboretum is a remarkable place that has long held a special place within the Royal British Legion.
>
> “Founded on an inspirational vision, its dedicated team has worked tirelessly over the past 25 years to solidify the site as the nation’s year-round place to remember.
>
> “This integration of governance opens the next chapter in its history, placing the Royal British Legion National Remembrance Gardens at the heart of our remembrance work.
>
> “This strengthens our ability to invest in the long‑term future of the site, building on its incredible legacy while preserving the character, purpose and sense of welcome that mean so much to those who visit.”

But Robert Brown, who launched [the online petition](https://www.change.org/p/preserve-the-name-of-the-national-memorial-arboretum?ref=lichfieldlive.co.uk) against the plans, said the move would result in the loss of the site’s “unique indentity”.

He said:

> “The National Memorial Arboretum is more than just a location – it’s a sanctuary of remembrance, education and reflection that holds an indispensable place in the hearts of countless individuals.
>
> “It serves as a poignant symbol of national pride and a place to honour those who have served and sacrificed.
>
> “Any proposal to change the name of this esteemed site undermines its rich heritage and the deep emotional connections many have with it.
>
> “Changing the name of such a significant landmark would result in the loss of its unique identity which has been carefully built over the years.
>
> “This identity is not just in its name but in its essence – the experience it offers to every visitor who walks through its paths.
>
> “For families, veterans, and educational groups, the arboretum is synonymous with priceless memories and learning.”

Mr Brown added that the retaining the current National Memorial Arboretum title would “safeguard a place that holds immense emotional and historical value for so many”.

He added:

> “We urge decision-makers to honour the legacy and invaluable contribution the National Memorial Arboretum has made to our community and nation by preserving its name.
>
> “Our history and our memories deserve to be protected – and so does the name that encapsulates them.”
