Lichfield RUFC signed off for the season with a thrilling encounter against Old Halesonians in front of a bumper crowd at Cooke Fields.

The Greens came from 28-9 down with 60 minutes on the clock to clinch victory by a solitary point with the last kick of the game.

The opening half ebbed and flowed as Lichfield attempted their all-action style but were guilty of the same basic errors. It was through these that Old Halesonians gained two converted tries.

But the hosts responded with a clever interception from scrum half Jonny Evans to head in 14-5 behind at the break.

The second half was certainly where the action happened. The first 20 minutes saw a repeat of the opening period with Lichfield mistakes contributing to Old Hales gaining two further scores, both of which were converted.

With an hour on the clock the game was beginning to look like a lost cause for the Greens. But they dented the Old Hales advantage when Paul Maxwell-Keys got on the end of a long Rich Burton pass following a period of sustained pressure to score a try which was converted by Luke Massey.

Will Cotterhill then began caused the visiting defence problems following his move into scrum half and he muscled his way over on 70 minutes, also converted by Massey.

At this point the home crowd were becoming excited and urged the players on with some vocal support. Captain Burton produced the goods on 75 minutes with an outside break, exposing a defence which was now out on its feet to cross the line. Massey converted and the hosts were two points adrift with four minutes to play.

Lichfield threw everything at Old Hales and were finally rewarded with a penalty 50 metres out. To the amazement of all, Cotterhill tapped the penalty and when an Old Hales player tackled him without retreating 10 a further penalty was awarded 40 metres out. Massey duly held his nerve and put the ball between the posts to take the game 29-28.

The game brought Lichfield’s season to close, with a more than respectable record of 14 wins and 12 defeats from 26 league games which sees them remain in National Three Midlands
