Two second half goals from Tony Clarke were enough for Lichfield City FC to see off local rivals Heath Hayes.

Gary Birch’s men confirmed their place among the early season Midland Football League Division One pacesetters with the result.

Thomas Evans and Odane Barnes both spurned early chances before Andre Francis fired straight at the keeper from eight yards out.

Heath Hayes were struggling to create chances but were thankful for City’s lack of cutting edge in the first half as Clarke was the latest to miss a glorious chance.

The hosts almost hit Lichfield with a sucker punch just before the break seeing a good opportunity go wide of the target.

City must have been fearing that the missed chances would cost them when Heath Hayes hit the post a minute after the restart.

Barnes then sent a free header over the top as Lichfield starting to get back into their rhythm.

Evans and Clarke saw chances go begging, while sub Joe Haines was unlucky as his effort from distance flew just over.

It really didn’t look like being Lichfield’s day when Crawford somehow failed to find the net with a header from three yards out.

But City were given a lifeline with a penalty kick. Clarke kept his nerve to find the net and finally break the deadlock.

The Lichfield striker then sealed the result with his second goal of the game.

The result leaves the Brownsfield Park side third in the early season table. They face second placed Leicester Road at home on Saturday (August 22), kick-off 3pm.
