Train services have been hit after cabling was damaged in Lichfield.

British Transport Police were called to the line at Watery Lane this morning (October 7) after reports that signalling cable had been damaged.

The incident caused chaos for commuters as services were disrupted and cancelled while engineers repaired the cabling.

“Officers attended along with Network Rail engineers and discovered about 40metres of telecoms cable had been cut – but not stolen – at the location,” said a British Transport Police spokesman.

“The damage resulted in trains being diverted, causing delays and inconvenience to passengers and rail staff this morning.

“Enquiries are ongoing and officers are appealing for anyone who saw anything suspiciously in the area, or who has information about those responsible for the damage, to come forward.”

Anyone with information can contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, quoting log number 114 of 07/10/2011, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
