TWO people have been arrested after an operation tackling knife crime in Burntwood.

It comes after police spotted a suspected drug deal between a man and and the passenger of a car at 6.30pm on Saturday (20th June).

They stopped and searched those inside a vehicle, finding cocaine, three mobile phones, a Stanley knife and cash.

A 43-year-old man, from the Walsall area, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a blade in a public place and possession with intent to supply a controlled drug of class A cocaine. A 36-year-old man, from the Redditch area, was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a controlled drug of class A cocaine.

Both have been released on bail while enquiries continue.

Inspector Mel Byrne, of the Lichfield local policing team, said:

> "Knife crime on a county-wide and local level is an active priority for us here in Staffordshire.
>
> “Officers undertake a range of activity, including targeted operations, weapon sweeps, visits to habitual knife carriers and education sessions in schools to explain the dangers and consequences that come from carrying a knife.
>
> “We're working hard every single day on a local level to tackle knife crime proactively across Staffordshire.”

The targeted operation also saw officers carried out ten stop-searches where they issued five public protection notices.
