Michael Fabricant says he is pleased more younger voters turned out after seeing his majority in Lichfield and Burntwood extended.

A turnout figure of 72.1% saw 53,674 of the 74,430 residents eligible to vote across the district visit the ballot box.

Mr Fabricant said the number – which was up from 69.3% two years ago was good for local democracy.

“This result for Lichfield is a good result,” he said. “We’ve seen more people voting this time than we have in a long time.

“I’m very pleased to see many of them were younger voters too which is good news for democracy in our area.”

Mr Fabricant won 34,018 votes compared to 28,389 last time around, seeing his share of the vote rise from 55.2& to 63.6%.

But with the Conservatives facing an uncertain night nationally, Mr Fabricant admitted there was still plenty for his party to play for.

“There hasn’t been the landslide some were predicting,” he said. “Not that I thought there was going to be a landslide.

“The results are very close. From watching the TV coverage, it seems that sometimes it’s been a Conservative win, sometimes it’s been a Labour win and the night is still young.”
