Burntwood were given a walkover into the 3rd Round of the RFU Senior Vase competition when opponents Belper cried off the fixture due to a lack of front row players.

Attention then focused on to the second string who entertained Aldridge at The Sportsway in front of a sizeable audience. Unfortunately, there was not much to warm up the crowd on a cold afternoon but the hosts managed to win 13-10 despite spending much of the match in their own half.

The spectators had to wait until the last ten minutes of the contest before either try line was crossed and then there were three tries in quick succession.

The hosts spent most of the opening 25 minutes defending in their own half. They did well to keep the visitors out and only conceded one kickable penalty after 17 minutes which was left of the posts from 30 metres.

When the home side finally broke into Aldridge territory, they worked their way up to the five metre line. The visitors infringed and Mitch Carless landed a straightforward penalty to open the scoring on the half hour.

Back came Aldridge to spend the rest of the first period in the Burntwood half. When they had the chance to equalise, a penalty attempt from in front of the posts skimmed the wrong side of the upright.

Sixteen minutes into the second period Burntwood went further ahead when an Aldridge player infringed and was sin-binned leaving Ben Holt to double the score with a penalty.

Aldridge finally got the try they had threatened for most of the afternoon after 33 minutes. Following a scrum 5 they worked the ball left then right to create the overlap for the score.

Six minutes later Burntwood caught their opponents in trouble at a line out 30 metres out. They earned a 5 metre scrum but lost possession. However, Matt Sishton caught the clearance kick and fed Scott Slater who went close to the left corner before being forced into touch.

Aldridge were penalised at the line out and a quick tapped ball to Ben Poulton saw him force his way over the line by the posts for a try converted by Holt.

Despite being two scores behind, Aldridge hit back and four minutes into added time one of the best back moves of the day stretched the home defence for a try. The failed conversion brought the final whistle.

This Saturday (October 20) Burntwood resume league action with a trip to Cleobury Mortimer. A coach for players, officials and supporters leaves the clubhouse at midday. The 2nds host Willenhall 3rds and the Development squad welcome Wheaton Aston.

Female vocalist Marie Neale provides entertainment in the clubhouse on October 26, starting at 7.30 pm. Free admission.
