MEDALS belonging to a soldier who died during World War One have been returned to his family after work by a local group.

Members of Burntwood Family History Group (BFHG) swung into action after being contacted by Helen Wood, from Cannock Wood, found the collection of medals in her late mother’s house.

The inscription on the back showed they had been awarded to 14042 Private Bert Gozzard of the 2nd Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers.

As part of efforts to commemorate the centenary of the Great War, BFHG had compiled biographies of a number of soldiers commemorated on local war memorials.

After searching online, Helen found that one of those featured in the work was Private Bert Gozzard who had died of his wounds on 20th May 1915.

A spokesperson for BFHG said:

> “After finding Bert’s biography online, Helen asked us for help tracing the family – Thte challenge was accepted and solved.
>
> “We made contact with Bert’s great niece Norma Summers, was was delighted to hear of the discovery.
>
> “The medals – the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal – were formally handed over at our January meeting.”
